Live on an autistic island?
This CNN video may be one of the most inspiring, yet heartbreaking things I’ve ever watched.
It reminds me of a scene from the movie “Awakenings“:
Sayer: “What must it be like to be them? What are they thinking?”
Dr. Ingham: “They’re not. The virus didn’t spare the higher faculties.”
Sayer: “We know what for a fact?”
Dr. Ingham: “Yes.”
Dr. Ingham: “Because the alternative would be unthinkable.”
I remember how disturbing this line was in the movie, and watching Amanda Baggs, who has broken free of this “unthinkable” existance is nothing short of inspirational.
The thought of the countless autistic people who lived before her, without the ability to communicate though this technology (and those that still can’t), and how they have been “passed over” by the rest of the world, because people couldn’t (or wouldn’t) consider the “unthinkable” is heartbreaking…and a little terrifying.
Not often does something as simple as a video clip truely alter my perception of the world around me, this one may have. I’ll be thinking about this for a long time.
